The Smart Export Guarantee: Sell Unused Electricity Back to the Grid!
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) was introduced in January 2020 to replace the Feed-in Tariff. It allows homeowners to earn money by exporting excess electricity back to the National Grid. Eligibility criteria:
- You must have a smart meter
- You must own your solar panels
- Your installation must be MCS-certified (ours are!)
- Your must not be receiving SEG payments from another provider
How much you earn from SEG payments will depend on your electricity supplier and energy use. A typical 8KW system will earn approximately £845 per year from SEG payments alone.

Frequently Asked Questions - Solar
How does solar power work?
Solar power works by harnessing energy from the sun using photovoltaic (PV) panels. These panels contain cells that convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to power your home.
Are solar panels suitable for my home?
Solar electricity is suitable for most homes with access to direct sunlight, only thatched roofs are truly problematic. An assessment of your home's location and energy needs can help determine its suitability for solar power.
Most homes purchase between 1.2kW to 4kW systems. A typical 4 kW system requires approximately 20m2 roof space. There are different sizes and different shapes of panels and they do not have to be next to each other meaning most roofs are large enough to support your needs.
Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?
In England most solar electricity systems don’t need any planning permission. However, we will consult your local planning office if you live in a Listed Building, a Conservation Area or in a World Heritage Area.
We can undertake full planning application on your behalf – this includes the purchase and design of two Ordnance Survey Maps (1:500 and 1:2500), as well as the Planning Specification, and the Design and Access Statement, and all other relevant required submission documentation.
What types of solar panels are available, and how efficient are they?
There are different types of solar panels, including monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. Efficiency varies, with monocrystalline panels typically being the most efficient. When you receive a quotation from us, we will advise on the mos-efficient panels for you unique system.
How long do solar panels typically last, and what factors affect their lifespan?
Solar panels typically last 25-30 years. Factors like quality, maintenance, and environmental conditions can influence their lifespan.
Are solar panels a good investment?
Absolutely, solar power is a great investment. You can dramatically reduce or eliminate your electricity bills, boost your property value, and help the environment. It's a smart way to save money and embrace a sustainable future.
Solar panels can also increase the resale value of your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers due to reduced energy costs.
What maintenance do solar panels require?
Solar power systems have few moving parts, needing very little maintenance. Rain usually cleans rooftop systems, but an annual service visit is recommended for optimal performance.
For issues like dust, debris, snow, or bird droppings, use warm water and mild dishwashing liquid with a telescopic cleaning pole.
Solar power is a reliable technology with 20–25-year warranties on panels. Panels last over 25 years, but the inverter may need replacement (around £750).
What's involved in connecting my solar panels to the National Grid?
We will notify your Building Control Officer and, if necessary, the District Network Operator that you have installed a solar PV system.
Frequently Asked Questions - Battery Storage
What is battery storage, and why should I consider it for my home or business?
Battery storage systems function by storing electricity in batteries when there is excess supply, like during sunny days with surplus solar energy. This stored energy is then available for use during periods of high demand or when the primary power source is unavailable, ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
It provides benefits such as energy savings, backup power, and environmental sustainability, making it a wise choice for reducing energy costs and increasing resilience.
What is the typical lifespan of battery storage systems?
The lifespan of battery storage systems varies based on factors like the battery type and usage patterns. Generally, lithium-ion batteries used in residential and commercial settings can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years or longer when properly maintained.
Battery storage systems typically require minimal maintenance. Routine checks, battery capacity assessments, and ensuring proper ventilation are essential for optimal performance. Modern systems often include Battery Management Systems (BMS) for automated monitoring and maintenance.
Can I install battery storage without a solar panel system?
Not at all. Battery Storage Solutions work for all households or businesses, regardless of whether they have solar panels or not. Battery Storage allows you to charge up at a lower nightly rate and use the cheaper electricity during peak times where energy costs are typically 4x the price.
Can I expand my battery storage system's capacity as my energy needs grow?
Our battery storage systems in the UK are scalable, allowing you to increase your storage capacity as your energy demands increase. This flexibility ensures that your energy storage solution can adapt to your evolving requirements.
Can I export excess energy back to the grid with a battery storage system?
In the UK, you can potentially export excess energy back to the grid and earn money through the SEG. This allows you to receive payments for any surplus electricity you generate and feed back into the grid, providing an additional source of income. We will be able to advise you if this is possible when we generate your quote.
How do I choose the right battery storage solution?
Selecting the ideal battery storage system depends on factors such as energy needs, budget, and specific requirements. We recommend contacting our expert team for a personalised assessment and tailored recommendations that align with your unique circumstances.
To estimate energy savings, you can consult with our experts. Factors such as your electricity usage, solar panel output, and grid electricity rates are considered when determining potential savings.
Can I monitor and control my battery storage system remotely?
Our battery storage systems come with mobile apps or web-based platforms that allow you to monitor and control your system remotely, giving you real-time insights and control over your energy usage.
